Em 14 de março de 1985, é assinado o Decreto de criação do Arquivo Público do Distrito Federal, que passa a abrigar toda a documentação sob a custódia da NOVACAP, inclusive documentos produzidos antes da construção de Brasília. O primeiro recolhimento da NOVACAP para o ArPDF ocorreu em 28 de abril de 1987, sendo registrado no Processo NOVACAP nº 112.03.953/88.
